John Cephus McCorvey Jr. was born May 11, 1939 in Mobile, Alabama to John C. McCovery Sr. and Willie Mae Weatherspoon.
Over nearly 86 years he lived a life of helping others, with a smile and friendliness that led the way.
He held positions of authority from police officer in East St Louis, IL to Warden of the Mobile County Jail, "the first black" in the description of the latter. No matter the circumstances in such challenging positions "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" was his guide.

He is survived by daughters SheRie Wolosz and Sharon Stevens, sons John C. Washington, John McCorvey III, 27 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Celebration of life will be private.
